• Boeing Field (Images of Aviation: Washington)

Even before there were runways, the area south of the city of Seattle was Washington’s aviation hub. Charles Hamilton, a daredevil dubbed “Crazy Man of the Air,” became the first flyer in the state when he coaxed his Curtiss biplane into the sky over Meadows Racetrack in 1910. He promptly crashed. With the help of William Boeing and his growing aviation company, Boeing Field opened in 1928. In those early days, brave air travelers could hitch a ride along with bags of mail in cold, noisy biplanes. Bigger, better aircraft soon followed, but wartime intervened. Thousands of Flying Fortress bombers emerged from Boeing’s Plant 2 at the edge of the airfield and winged off to war. In the years after, Boeing Field served a dazzling array of winged machines―from the smallest Piper Cub to Air Force One.

  • Piper Cub Tales

Join the book's author as he flies adventure filled cross-country flights in a 1946 Piper Cub. Flying low and slow across seemingly endless prairies, through narrow mountain valleys, and over high mountain passes in the Rocky, Cascade and Appalachian Mountains, totaling some 71,695 miles, he and his passengers experience the extremes of Mother Nature's personality. As a purist, Frank navigates solely by aeronautical chart, plotter, stopwatch, airspeed and compass. His "seat of the pants" flying in a vintage tail-dragger gives the reader a feeling for what aviation was like in an almost bygone era. In the fall of 1969, with the ink on the Author's Private Pilot's Certificate hardly dry, he and his brother embarked on a cross-country trip from Madison, Wisconsin to Denver Colorado in his newly restored Cub. This flight, captured in this book, introduces you to the vagaries of the weather and the difficulty of navigating at low level using only a map, a compass, and airspeed. It also reveals the capabilities of this lightweight, low powered airplane. Even though the Cub's 12-gallon fuel tank restricts its range to around 100 miles per flight leg you will see how long distance flights are accomplished. As you follow the Cub's progress across the countryside, it will become apparent t...

  • Flight of Passage: A Memoir

Writer Rinker Buck looks back more than 30 years to a summer when he and his brother, at ages 15 and 17 respectively, became the youngest duo to fly across America, from New Jersey to California. Having grown up in an aviation family, the two boys bought an old Piper Cub, restored it themselves, and set out on the grand journey. Buck is a great storyteller, and once you get airborne with the boys you find yourself absorbed in a story of adventure and family drama. And Flight of Passage is also an affecting look back to the summer of 1966, when the times seemed much less cynical and adventures much more enjoyable.

  • Mr. Piper and his Cubs

Dust jacket notes: "The man who was to earn the sobriquet, 'the Henry Ford of aviation,' was both merchant and mystic," writes biographer Devon Francis. "William Piper was an anachronism, the gambler and archconservative. He took risks, but they were calculated; he kept his options open....He was a romantic and a missionary zealot in the world of small business. Near the half-century mark in age when he was inducted into aircraft manufacture, he had visions that puddle-jumper airplanes might - just might - one day become important."

  • A Life of Flight: One Pilot's Story, from Piper Cubs to 747s and Beyond

Pilot Bob Gartshore's 42-year flying career spanned a period of rapid aviation development - from fabric-covered Piper Cubs with a little 65-hp engine to Boeing 747s with four engines developing some 240,000 pounds of thrust. He logged over 21,000 hours in the cockpit, flying to six continents - freight, charter and scheduled runs - for the RCAF, Canadian Pacific Airlines, Wardair, and Canadian Airlines. Bob was also an instructor, simulator specialist and glider pilot. As captain, he progressed from the Harvard T-6, to the Dakota DC-3, C-119 Flying Boxcar, Douglas DC-6 (over 6,000 hours), Boeing 727, 707, 747 (7,000+ hours), Airbus A310 and, finally as a relief pilot in war-torn Angola for Mission Aviation, a Beechcraft King Air 100."I enjoyed my chosen career through its many ups and downs, and have also been lucky enough to have survived some of its possible sudden endings! My logbooks have been a great help with this exercise, jostling vivid memories out of hidden recesses."And those memories are varied indeed: flying into a cloud-shrouded, Greenland airstrip with both radar and beacons inoperable; exercising penguins on the tarmac; his son as co-pilot on both the 747 and the A310; Mecca-bound pilgrims kindling fires in the aisle to cook their mid-day meal; CF-FUN and CF-SEX;...

  • Gentlemen Volunteers: The Story of the American Ambulance Drivers in the First World War

They left Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Michigan, and Stanford to drive ambulances on the French front, and on the killing fields of World War I they learned that war was no place for gentlemen. The tale of the American volunteer ambulance drivers of the First World War is one of gallantry amid gore; manners amid madness. Arlen J. Hansen’s Gentlemen Volunteers brings to life the entire story of the men—and women—who formed the first ambulance corps, and who went on to redefine American culture. Some were to become legends—Ernest Hemingway, e. e. cummings, Malcolm Cowley, and Walt Disney—but all were part of a generation seeking something greater and grander than what they could find at home. The war in France beckoned them, promising glory, romance, and escape. Between 1914 and 1917 (when the United States officially entered the war), they volunteered by the thousands, abandoning college campuses and prep schools across the nation and leaving behind an America determined not to be drawn into a “European war.” What the volunteers found in France was carnage on an unprecedented scale. Here is a spellbinding account of a remarkable time; the legacy of the ambulance drivers of WWI endures to this day.

  • Cubs On The Loose: Old Airplanes - New Adventures

Cubs On The Loose: Old Airplanes -- New Adventures is an irresistible series of true adventures with vintage Piper Cubs and their owners. NC-87881, lovingly restored for author Lyle Wheeler, has the time of her life flying with fellow Cubs and their "humanoids" just as they had in the past --- without modern navigational tools. They represent a group of birdmen and birdwomen around the world who appreciate the Piper Cubs and their cousins, the Taylorcrafts, Aeroncas, Luscombes and many others. The Cubs, flying in formation, landing on grass runways and displayed at airshows provide excitement to those who enjoy the "lost art of low-and-slow, long distance flight." As the narrator of this series of true barn-storming trips, NC-87881 notes that most Piper Cubs have not survived into retirement. "However, some of us are lucky enough to find ourselves in the hands of loving humanoids who treat us as actual living members of their families". Fly with Wheeler and 881, and their companions, on their nostalgic excursions as they discover America, past and present. See the stary skies, experience the unpredictable weather, put your flat little donuts on the lush grass runways as you travel with these fun-loving travelers. Along the way, the Cubs learn that fuel advertised is not always fu...

  • Flying the Rim

For a brief two-year period at mid-twentieth century a new gold rush began in the United States . Most of the big strikes were discovered from the air. Flying the Rim is the story of the author's search for uranium in the 1950s flying a Piper Supercub.
